While definitions can vary, the American Psychological Association describes hypnosis as a cooperative interaction in which the participant responds to the suggestions of the hypnotist. Hypnosis, in its basest form, is thousands of years old. It has been documented that it was used by the Egyptians over two millennia before our current calendar was adopted. It was accepted by the British Medical Society over 175 years ago and by the American Medical Association nearly three score years ago.
While hypnosis has become well-known thanks to popular acts where people are prompted to performs unusual or ridiculous actions, the technique has also been clinically proven to provide medical and therapeutic benefits, most notably in the reduction of pain and anxiety. It is important to distinguish between the antics that occur when a stage hypnotist uses it at a Las Vegas showroom and the Clinical Hypnotherapy used by certified professionals. Clinical Hypnotherapy, when used by a trained and certified professional can alter negative mindsets and change bad habits that impact clients lives.
