In decision theory a mindset is defined as “a set of assumptions, methods, or notations held by one or more people that is so established that it creates a powerful incentive within these people to continue to adopt or accept prior behaviors, choices, or tools.” In simpler terms, a mental mindset is simply the unconscious feelings, thoughts and habits that influence your daily life.

As difficult as mindsets are to create, they are just as hard to change, since mindsets are buried deep within our unconscious mind.This phenomenon is also sometimes described as mental inertia, groupthink or a paradigm and it is often difficult to counteract its effects upon analysis and decision making processes. Since mental mindsets are embedded deep within the unconscious mind, not the conscious mind, they cannot simply be willed away. The only way to modify a negative or unwanted mindset is to use a methodology that connects directly to the unconscious mind and has the ability to change .

Mental Mindsets are those negative habits that are part of our conscious and unconscious minds that impact our daily activities and are key elements that are part of who we are. They can affect our abilities to successfully achieve our goals, both short-term and long-term. Simply understanding how those bad habits impact our lives is the first step in mastering them.

To understand how mental mindsets become part of our lives, we have to understand how they are initially formed and understand how they become entrenched in our long term memory. As the figure shows, our long-term memory contains two types, explicit memory, which resides in the conscious mind and implicit memory which is locked in the unconscious mind. In essence, procedural memories are those things such as skills, tasks and habits that are deeply engrained in what we do every day. Declarative memory, on the other hand, are those facts, events concepts and experiences that we recall at a later date, but have no bearing on how we accomplish our everyday jobs and ingrained abilities. Though positive mental mindsets are always a great object to possess, having negative mindsets can not only abolish our abilities to accomplish our personal lifestyle tasks and skills, it can destroy our business careers or demolish our athletic abilities.

Finally, the mid-17th century English proverb, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” delineates one of the prime tenets of coaching, that a coach must have the ability to assist clients toward effectively balancing their work with all other aspects of their life.
